Vacuum Electronic Devices & Applications Society (VEDAS)

The field of Vacuum Electron Devices and Applications (VEDA) has been going through a period of resurgence over the last few decades. The emergence of bremsstrahlung HPM devices like gyrotrons and vircators has escalated the frequency and power limits of vacuum electron devices (VEDs) to Terahertz and Gigawatt levels. The convergence of microelectronics and vacuum electronics has given rise to vacuum microelectronics devices, which use field-emission cathodes, based on silicon-tip arrays, carbon nanotubes and MEMs. With the advent of MPMs, the traveling-wave tubes continue to be important. Conventional devices like klystrons, magnetrons, triodes, tetrodes, and vacuum switches and interrupters still continue to find wide civil and military applications. In fact, the availability of advanced, fully three-dimensional simulation codes, advanced materials, precision fabrication and processing technology has added new dimensions to the performance of the conventional microwave tubes to a level unsurpassable in the near future by solid state devices. The VED community has also grown significantly over the years both in our country and abroad. It has long been felt that the community in our country ought to have constituted a forum for the exchange of ideas through regular interactions via newsletters, meetings, workshops, symposia, etc. With this in view, Vacuum Electronic Devices and Applications Society (VEDAS) was formed on 31 October 2004 to bring together the fraternity under the canopy of a society. The Society has been registered with the Registrar of Societies, Bangalore. Some of the activities to be promoted by VEDAS are:

  • Organisation of annual seminars/workshops, specialized courses at national level.
  • Organisation of Symposiums / Workshops.
  • Publication of newsletters / e-newsletters.
  • Creation of database on experts, facilities, bibliographic publications.
  • Publication of monograph.
  • Institution of Fellowships / Awards.
Vacuum Electronic Devices & Applications Society (VEDAS)

We invite the professionals working in the following areas as well as in related fields to join VEDAS:

  • Vacuum Electronic Devices
  • Accelerators
  • Vacuum microelectronic devices, MEMS
  • High-voltage and pulsed-power system
  • Electron emitters
  • Vacuum equipment, vacuum interrupters
  • Materials
  • Fabrication techniques
  • Magnetics
  • Applications of vacuum electronic devices

President

Dr. Y Choyal

Creation of VEDAS:

During a Workshop organised as part of the celebration of MTRDC Annual/Foundation Day held at Begaluru in the year 2004, the idea emanated from Dr. Lalit Kumar, the erstwhile Director of Microwave Tube Research and Development Centre (MTRDC), DRDO, that those working in the area of microwave tubes and their applications in India should have a society of their own. In the conference room of MTRDC, we took part in a discussion to coin a suitable name for the society. Besides MTRDC scientists, the scientists of Central Electronics Engineering Research Institute (CEERI), CSIR including Dr. SN Joshi and Dr. LM Joshi took part in the discussion. Dr. SK Datta of MTRDC was writing all the potential names suggested on a board, and finally ‘VEDA’ Society, suggested by me for our society name, was found ‘catchy’ and unanimously accepted (the acronym VEDA standing for Vacuum Electronic Devices and Application). Subsequently, Dr. Lalit Kumar took help of his colleagues including Dr. SK Datta of MTRDC to complete all the formalities for the official registration of VEDAS at Bengaluru.
